Range Calculator

Calculate the spread of your data - minimum, maximum, range, and midrange

About Range

What is Range?

The range is the difference between the maximum and minimum values in a dataset. It measures the spread or dispersion of the data.

Range Formula:

Range = Maximum value - Minimum value

Midrange

The average of maximum and minimum values

Midrange = (Max + Min) / 2

Coefficient of Range

Relative measure for comparison

CoR = (Max - Min) / (Max + Min)

When to Use Range:

  • Quick assessment of data spread
  • Quality control and variability checks
  • Identifying potential outliers
  • Simple dispersion analysis
  • Comparing variability between datasets

Example Calculation:

For dataset: 5, 12, 18, 25, 30

  • Minimum: 5
  • Maximum: 30
  • Range: 30 - 5 = 25
  • Midrange: (30 + 5) / 2 = 17.5

Limitations of Range:

  • Only considers two values (min and max)
  • Highly sensitive to outliers
  • Doesn't reflect distribution shape
  • Use with standard deviation for better analysis

About This Calculator

Range Calculator - Calculate Data Range & Spread

Calculate the range of any dataset with our free online range calculator. Find the minimum, maximum, range, and midrange instantly. The range measures how spread out your data is.

What is Range?

The range is the difference between the maximum and minimum values in a dataset. It's a simple measure of dispersion or spread that shows how far apart the extreme values are.

Range Formula

Range = Maximum value - Minimum value

How to Calculate Range

Step 1: Find the minimum (smallest) value

Step 2: Find the maximum (largest) value

Step 3: Subtract minimum from maximum

Example Calculation

Find the range of: 5, 12, 18, 25, 30

Step 1: Minimum = 5
Step 2: Maximum = 30
Step 3: Range = 30 - 5 = 25

Result: The range is 25

Midrange

The midrange is the average of the maximum and minimum values. It provides a quick estimate of the center of the data.

Midrange = (Maximum + Minimum) / 2

Example: For 5, 12, 18, 25, 30

Midrange = (30 + 5) / 2 = 17.5

Coefficient of Range

The coefficient of range is a relative measure that allows comparison between datasets with different scales.

Coefficient of Range = (Max - Min) / (Max + Min)

This gives a value between 0 and 1, making it useful for comparing variability.

When to Use Range

  • Quick spread assessment: Get an immediate sense of data dispersion
  • Quality control: Monitor process variability
  • Outlier detection: Identify extreme values
  • Simple analysis: When you need basic dispersion measure

Range vs Standard Deviation

RangeStandard Deviation
Uses only min and maxUses all values
Simple to calculateMore complex
Very sensitive to outliersLess sensitive
Good for quick checksBetter for detailed analysis

Real-World Applications

Temperature Variability

Find the temperature range in a location: High - Low = Daily range

Stock Prices

52-week range shows the trading range over a year

Test Scores

Score range indicates class performance spread

Manufacturing

Range shows process consistency and quality

Limitations of Range

  • Outlier sensitive: One extreme value can drastically change range
  • Ignores distribution: Doesn't show how values are distributed
  • Sample size dependent: Larger samples tend to have larger ranges

Practice Problems

Problem 1

Find the range of: 10, 15, 20, 25, 30

Solution: Max = 30, Min = 10, Range = 20

Problem 2

Daily temperatures: 65°F, 72°F, 78°F, 82°F, 68°F. Find range and midrange.

Solution: Range = 82 - 65 = 17°F, Midrange = (82 + 65) / 2 = 73.5°F
