Mode Calculator
Find the most frequently occurring value(s) in your dataset
About the Mode
What is the Mode?
The mode is the value that appears most frequently in a dataset. Unlike mean and median, the mode can be used with both numerical and categorical data.
Unimodal
One value occurs most frequently
Example: 1, 2, 2, 3, 4
Mode: 2
Bimodal
Two values tie for most frequent
Example: 1, 1, 2, 3, 3, 4
Modes: 1, 3
No Mode
All values appear once
Example: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
No mode exists
When to Use the Mode:
- For categorical data (colors, sizes, preferences)
- To find the most popular or common item
- For inventory management and stock decisions
- In market research and surveys
Real-World Examples:
- Shoe sizes: Most common size to stock
- Elections: Most voted candidate
- Survey responses: Most selected option
- Product colors: Best-selling color
About This Calculator
Mode Calculator - Find Most Frequent Value
Find the mode (most frequently occurring value) of any dataset with our free online mode calculator. Simply enter your numbers and instantly see which values appear most often with detailed frequency counts.
What is the Mode?
The mode is the value that appears most frequently in a dataset. It's one of three measures of central tendency, along with mean and median. Unlike mean and median, the mode can be used with both numerical and categorical data.
Types of Mode
Unimodal (One Mode)
When one value occurs more frequently than all others.
Example: 2, 3, 3, 5, 7, 7, 7, 9
Mode: 7 (appears 3 times)
Bimodal (Two Modes)
When two values are tied for the highest frequency.
Example: 2, 2, 3, 5, 7, 7, 9
Modes: 2 and 7 (both appear twice)
Multimodal (Multiple Modes)
When three or more values are tied for the highest frequency.
Example: 2, 2, 3, 3, 5, 7, 7
Modes: 2, 3, and 7 (all appear twice)
No Mode
When all values appear exactly once.
Example: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Mode: None - all values are unique
How to Find the Mode
- Count frequency of each value in the dataset
- Find the maximum frequency count
- Identify mode(s) - values with the maximum frequency
Step-by-Step Example
Find the mode of: 5, 8, 5, 12, 8, 5, 15
Step 1: Count frequencies
5 appears 3 times
8 appears 2 times
12 appears 1 time
15 appears 1 time
Step 2: Find maximum frequency
Maximum = 3
Step 3: Identify mode(s)
Mode = 5 (appears 3 times, more than any other)
When to Use the Mode
The mode is uniquely useful because:
- Works with categories: Can find the most common color, size, or type
- Real decisions: Helps with inventory and business choices
- Easy to understand: Simply the "most popular" option
Real-World Applications
Retail & Inventory
Find the most popular product sizes to stock more of those items.
Example: If Medium is the mode shirt size, stock more Mediums.
Market Research
Identify the most common customer preferences.
Example: Most selected feature in a survey.
Quality Control
Find the most common defect type to prioritize fixes.
Education
Identify the most common score or grade distribution.
Mode vs Mean vs Median
| Measure | Best For | Data Types | Outliers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mode | Most common item | All types | Not affected |
| Mean | Average value | Numeric only | Highly affected |
| Median | Middle value | Numeric/ordinal | Resistant |
Practice Problems
Problem 1: Unimodal
Find the mode of: 4, 7, 4, 9, 12, 7, 4
Solution: 4 (appears 3 times)
Problem 2: Bimodal
Find the mode of: 3, 6, 3, 8, 6, 10
Solution: 3 and 6 (both appear twice)
Problem 3: No Mode
Find the mode of: 5, 12, 8, 15, 20
Solution: No mode - all values appear once
