How to Calculate Drywall
Calculating Square Footage
Walls:
(Perimeter × Height) - Openings = Square Footage
Example (12' × 14' room, 8' ceilings):
Perimeter: (12 + 14) × 2 = 52 linear feet
Wall area: 52 × 8 = 416 sq ft
Subtract openings:
- Window: 3' × 4' = 12 sq ft
- Door: 3' × 6'8" (6.67') = 20 sq ft

Ceilings:

22' × 24' = 528 sq ft

Example (552 sq ft room):
Estimate seams:
- Walls: ~50 linear feet per wall × 4 = 200'
- Ceiling: ~100' (depends on orientation)

Total: 350 linear feet
Rolls needed: 350 ÷ 500 = 0.7 = 1 roll
Add 1 extra: 2 rolls
Joint Compound (Mud)
Types:
- All-Purpose: Ready-mixed, easy to use
- Setting-Type: Powder, mixed with water, dries hard
- Lightweight: Shrinks less, easy to sand
Coverage:
- All-purpose: ~2-3 lbs per 100 sq ft of drywall
- Setting-type: ~1.5-2 lbs per 100 sq ft
Calculation:
(Square Footage ÷ 100) × 2.5 = Pounds Needed
Example:
552 sq ft ÷ 100 = 5.52
5.52 × 2.5 = 13.8 lbs
Buy: 5-gallon pail (approximately 55 lbs) for larger projects
Or: 3-4 gallons (3.75 lb/gallon) = 12-15 lbs
Pro Tip: Buy more than you think. First coat takes the most. Better to have leftovers than run out.
Drywall Screws
Screw Length:
- 1-1/4" for 1/2" drywall
- 1-5/8" for 5/8" drywall
