How to Calculate Drywall

Wall Area Calculation

Formula: (Perimeter × Height) - Openings = Wall Area

Example (12' × 14' room, 8' ceilings):

  • Perimeter: (12 + 14) × 2 = 52 feet
  • Wall Area: 52 × 8 = 416 sq ft
  • Openings: 1 window (12 sq ft) + 1 door (20 sq ft) = 32 sq ft
  • Net Wall Area: 416 - 32 = 384 sq ft

Ceiling Area Calculation

Formula: Length × Width = Ceiling Area

Example: 12' × 14' = 168 sq ft

Sheet Calculation

Formula: Total Area ÷ Sheet Size = Sheets Needed

Example (4×8 sheets, 32 sq ft each):

  • Total Area: 552 sq ft (walls + ceiling)
  • Sheets: 552 ÷ 32 = 17.25 = 18 sheets
  • Add 10% waste: 18 × 1.10 = 19.8 = 20 sheets

What is Drywall?

Drywall (also known as sheetrock, wallboard, plasterboard, or gypsum board) is a panel made of gypsum plaster pressed between two thick sheets of paper. It's used to create interior walls and ceilings.

Drywall Types

How to Calculate Drywall

Calculating Square Footage

Walls:

(Perimeter × Height) - Openings = Square Footage

Example (12' × 14' room, 8' ceilings):

Perimeter: (12 + 14) × 2 = 52 linear feet
Wall area: 52 × 8 = 416 sq ft

Subtract openings:
- Window: 3' × 4' = 12 sq ft
- Door: 3' × 6'8" (6.67') = 20 sq ft
Total openings: 32 sq ft

Net wall area: 416 - 32 = 384 sq ft

Ceilings:

Length × Width = Square Footage

Example:

Ceiling: 12' × 14' = 168 sq ft

Total Area:

Walls + Ceiling = Total Square Footage

Example:

Total: 384 + 168 = 552 sq ft

Calculating Number of Sheets

4' × 8' Sheets (32 sq ft each):

Total Sq Ft ÷ 32 = Sheets Needed

Example:

552 sq ft ÷ 32 = 17.25 sheets
Round up: 18 sheets
Add 10% waste: 18 × 1.10 = 19.8 = 20 sheets

4' × 12' Sheets (48 sq ft each):

Total Sq Ft ÷ 48 = Sheets Needed

Example:

552 sq ft ÷ 48 = 11.5 sheets
Round up: 12 sheets
Add 10% waste: 12 × 1.10 = 13.2 = 14 sheets

Drywall for Common Projects

Single Room

12' × 14' room with 8' ceilings:

Walls:

Perimeter: 52 feet
Wall area: 52 × 8 = 416 sq ft
Openings: -32 sq ft (1 window, 1 door)

Ceiling:

12' × 14' = 168 sq ft

Entire House (Rough Estimate)

Perimeter Method:

(Perimeter × Wall Height) + Ceiling Area = Total Sq Ft

Example:

House footprint: 40' × 30' = 1,200 sq ft
Perimeter: (40 + 30) × 2 = 140'
Wall height: 8'
Wall area: 140 × 8 = 1,120 sq ft
Ceiling area: 1,200 sq ft
Total: 2,320 sq ft

Sheets (4 × 8): 2,320 ÷ 32 = 72.5 = 73 sheets + 15% = 84 sheets

Room-by-Room Method (More Accurate):

  • Calculate each room separately
  • Add 10-15% waste
  • Account for interior walls

Garage

Typical 2-car garage: 22' × 24' with 9' ceilings:

Walls:

Perimeter: (22 + 24) × 2 = 92'
Wall area: 92 × 9 = 828 sq ft
Openings: -48 sq ft (2 doors)
Net walls: 780 sq ft

Ceiling:

22' × 24' = 528 sq ft

Total: 1,308 sq ft

Sheets (4 × 12 for 9' walls):

Walls: 780 ÷ 48 = 16.25 = 17 sheets + 10% = 19 sheets
Ceiling: 528 ÷ 48 = 11 sheets + 10% = 12 sheets
Total: 31 sheets (5/8" Type X for fire rating)

Additional Materials

Drywall Tape

Paper Tape:

  • Most common
  • 500' rolls
  • Strongest when used with setting-type compound

Mesh Tape:

  • Self-adhesive
  • Faster application
  • Not recommended for corners
  • Weaker than paper

Calculation:

Total Linear Feet of Seams ÷ Roll Length = Rolls Needed

Example (552 sq ft room):

Estimate seams:
- Walls: ~50 linear feet per wall × 4 = 200'
- Ceiling: ~100' (depends on orientation)
- Corner bead: ~50'
Total: 350 linear feet

Rolls needed: 350 ÷ 500 = 0.7 = 1 roll
Add 1 extra: 2 rolls

Joint Compound (Mud)

Types:

  • All-Purpose: Ready-mixed, easy to use
  • Setting-Type: Powder, mixed with water, dries hard
  • Lightweight: Shrinks less, easy to sand

Coverage:

  • All-purpose: ~2-3 lbs per 100 sq ft of drywall
  • Setting-type: ~1.5-2 lbs per 100 sq ft

Calculation:

(Square Footage ÷ 100) × 2.5 = Pounds Needed

Example:

552 sq ft ÷ 100 = 5.52
5.52 × 2.5 = 13.8 lbs

Buy: 5-gallon pail (approximately 55 lbs) for larger projects
Or: 3-4 gallons (3.75 lb/gallon) = 12-15 lbs

Pro Tip: Buy more than you think. First coat takes the most. Better to have leftovers than run out.

Drywall Screws

Screw Length:

  • 1-1/4" for 1/2" drywall
  • 1-5/8" for 5/8" drywall
  • Longer for multiple layers or furring strips

Screw Spacing:

  • Edges: Every 8 inches
  • Field: Every 12 inches
  • Ceilings: Every 8 inches (both edges and field)

Calculation:

Approximately 1 pound per 400-500 sq ft

Example:

552 sq ft ÷ 450 = 1.2 lbs
Buy: 2 lbs (minimum 1 lb for convenience)

Corner Bead

Types:

  • Metal: Nail-on or snap-on
  • Vinyl: Pre-taped, adhesive or staples
  • Paper-faced: Embedded in compound

Calculation:

Number of corners × Length = Linear Feet Needed

Example:

Room corners: 4 × 8' = 32 linear feet
Buy: 36' (3 pieces of 10' each)

Waste Factor

How Much Extra to Buy

Standard Projects:

  • 10% for simple rooms
  • 15% for multiple rooms
  • 20% for complex layouts (cutouts, angles)

Increase When:

  • Lots of windows and doors (more cutting)
  • Inexperienced installer
  • Vaulted or cathedral ceilings
  • Complex floor plan

Example:

Calculated: 20 sheets
Standard waste (10%): 20 × 1.10 = 22 sheets
High waste (20%): 20 × 1.20 = 24 sheets

Installation Tips

Hanging Order

  1. Ceiling first (if doing ceiling)
  2. Top row of walls (full sheets if possible)
  3. Bottom row of walls (cut pieces)
  4. Measure and mark electrical boxes before hanging

Sheet Orientation

Walls:

  • Horizontal: Fewer seams, but harder for one person
  • Vertical: Easier handling, more seams

Ceilings:

  • Perpendicular to joists: Essential for strength
  • Use 4' × 12' sheets when possible

Reducing Seams

Common Mistakes

How many sheets of drywall do I need for a 12 × 12 room?

12' × 12' room with 8' ceilings: Walls = (12+12) × 2 × 8 = 384 sq ft. Ceiling = 144 sq ft. Total = 528 sq ft. 528 ÷ 32 = 16.5 = 17 sheets + 10% = 19 sheets (4×8).

Should I use 1/2" or 5/8" drywall?

Use 1/2" for standard walls and ceilings (16" OC framing). Use 5/8" for ceilings with 24" OC framing, garages (fire code), and fire-rated walls.

How much joint compound do I need?

Approximately 2-3 lbs per 100 sq ft of drywall. For a 500 sq ft project: 5 × 2.5 = 12.5 lbs. Buy a 5-gallon bucket (~50 lbs) for larger projects.

How far apart should drywall screws be spaced?

Every 8 inches along all edges, every 12 inches in the field (middle of sheet). For ceilings: every 8 inches everywhere (edges and field).
